Basketball Recap: Dynamic Duo of Gabby Fichter and Selena Herrera Lead Coronado to Victory

After losing to Mar Vista the last time they met, Coronado decided to demonstrate that turnabout is fair play. The Coronado Islanders skirted past the Mar Vista Mariners 45-42. Given the Islanders' advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 552nd, while the Mariners are ranked 1189th), the result on Tuesday wasn't entirely unexpected.

Coronado was led to victory by Selena Herrera and Gabby Fichter. Herrera posted 21 points in addition to six boards and three steals, while Fichter earned 18 points and three steals. That's the most points Herrera has posted since back in January of 2024.

Despite the loss, Mar Vista still got an impressive performance from Anissa Smith, who dropped a double-double on 24 points and ten rebounds. That was a full 57.1% of Mar Vista's points, marking the fifth time in a row she's had more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Allyson Bell, who scored 12 points and seven boards.

The win made it two in a row for Coronado and bumps their season record up to 12-2. As for Mar Vista, they have also traveled a rocky road recently having lost eight of their last ten matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-11 record this season.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Coronado will head out to square off against Lincoln at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Lincoln will roll in looking for their fourth straight victory, something Coronado surely won't give up without a fight. As for Mar Vista, they won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against Castle Park at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
