Denver South is preparing for their first league matchup of the season on Friday. They will host the Arvada West Wildcats at 4:00 p.m. The timing isn't great for Denver South: they have been struggling with five straight losses at home dating back to last season, while Arvada West has snatched up three consecutive wins on the road.
Denver South is coming in off a wild two-game stretch: after soaring to 35 points last Friday, they were much more limited against Northfield on Friday. They took a 10-3 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Nighthawks.
Even if they lost, Denver South's defense still kept up the pressure with three sacks. The team can thank three different players for their defensive prowess: Simon Leon, Errol Rovinsky, and Josiah Thomas-Flores, who each picked up one sack apiece.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Arvada West). They took their matchup last Friday with ease, bagging a 70-0 win over Overland. The final result isn't all that surprising considering the Wildcats' considerable advantage in MaxPreps' Colorado football rankings (they are ranked seventh, while the Trailblazers are ranked 114th).
Denver South better keep an eye on Logan Duhachek. He was instrumental in Arvada West's win, throwing for 228 yards and five touchdowns while completing 73.3% of his passes, and also punching in one rushing score. Those five passing touchdowns gave Duhachek a new career-high. Keegen Balistreri was another key player, picking up 83 receiving yards and a pair of TDs.
Arvada West was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 214 rushing yards. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Overland only rushed for 98.
Arvada West didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. It was truly a group effort as Ayden Garcia, Jaxon Pyatt, and Jereimyah Berry picked up one apiece.
Denver South now has a losing record of 2-3. As for Arvada West, their victory bumped their record up to 5-0.
Denver South took a serious blow against Arvada West when the teams last played back in October of 2024, falling 48-6. That contest was all but decided by halftime, at which point the Ravens were down 34-0.
