The Point Loma Pointers will take on the Helix Highlanders in a tournament on Wednesday. The last nine games Point Loma has played (dating back to last season) have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.
Point Loma gave up the first runs on Monday, but they didn't let that get them down. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 3-2 victory over Vista.
The team relied heavily on Nico Quintero, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one home run.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Helix). Everything went their way against Mira Mesa on Monday as they made off with a 26-2 win. With that victory, the Highlanders brought their scoring average up to 9.8 runs per game.
Romeo Briones made a splash no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out eight batters over four innings while giving up just two earned runs off four hits (and not a single walk). Those eight strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with one home run, five RBI, and three runs. Those runs marked the first that he has scored this season.
In other pitching news, Elsa Becher looked comfortable as he tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit.
Back at the plate, Angel Watkins was a standout: he got on base in all five of his plate appearances with one home run, six RBI, and four runs. Those six RBI gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Bryan Herman, who fired off two home runs and five RBI while going 2-for-2.
Helix was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .556. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their batting average total in three consecutive matchups.
Helix's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 3-1. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.0 run on average over those games. As for Point Loma, their win (their first of the season) made their record 1-1-1.
Point Loma's speedy runners might be the difference in Wednesday's game. The Pointers have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.7 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Helix, though, as they've been averaging only 1 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Point Loma continue to outrun the ball?
Point Loma skirted past Helix 2-0 when the teams last played back in March of 2025. Do the Pointers have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Highlanders turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
