While Ryan Day leads the Ohio State football program on Saturdays as the head coach, his son
R.J. Day is making his mark under the Friday night lights.
R.J. just completed his sophomore season at
St. Francis DeSales (Columbus, Ohio) and is already the all-time leading passer for a school that has been open 84 years. The 6-foot, 195-pound signal caller led the Stallions (9-3) to the postseason after throwing for 1,425 yards and 14 touchdowns against three interceptions in 2024.
Day broke the record in the final game of the regular season, connecting with
Jordan Karhoff on a 24-yard pass. He went on to throw three touchdowns in that victory. Over his two-year career, he has compiled 2,993 passing yards and 29 touchdowns according to head coach Ryan Wiggins.
As a freshman in 2023, Day completed 71.1 percent of his passes for 1,568 yards and 15 touchdowns, helping the Stallions finish 5-6 and reach the postseason.
A scrambler who embraces contact, Day has rushed for 336 yards and five touchdowns in his high school career.
Boston College, Marshall and Toledo have already extended scholarship offers.
Before Ryan Day became the head coach at Ohio State, he was also a prolific quarterback. He was named the New Hampshire Gatorade Football Player of the Year at
Manchester Central (Manchester, N.H.) in 1996 and led the Little Green to consecutive state championship games, winning once.
The elder Day continued his playing career in college at New Hampshire, where Chip Kelly served as his offensive coordinator. As an assistant coach, he changed jobs 10 times from 2002-18 before taking over the top spot at Ohio State in 2019.
Under Day's guidance, the Buckeyes have gone 64-9 and are currently ranked No. 2 in the nation.
