The Segerstrom Jaguars will challenge the Trabuco Hills Mustangs at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
The scorekeeper got an easy start on Tuesday as neither Segerstrom nor Buena Park made it on the board until the fifth inning. The Jaguars fell just short of the Coyotes by a score of 3-2. The Jaguars have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Vicente Najera was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he pitched 6.1 innings while giving up three earned runs off seven hits. He has been consistent for a while: he hasn't given up more than two walks in ten consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Segerstrom saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Issac Acosta, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base and one run. Xavier Yanez was another, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one RBI.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Trabuco Hills, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Saturday. They walked away with a 6-2 win over Capistrano Valley Christian on Tuesday.
Josh Fitch made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he pitched five innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits. Fitch was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one RBI. That's the most hits he has posted since back in April.
In other pitching news, Skyler Sims looked comfortable as he tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits.
Back at the plate, the team relied heavily on Daniel Van De Kreeke, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Landon Pompey, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base and one RBI.
Trabuco Hills' victory was their eighth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 16-11. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.8 runs on average over those games. As for Segerstrom, their loss dropped their record down to 8-19.
Segerstrom suffered a grim 10-1 defeat to Trabuco Hills in their previous matchup back in April of 2021. Can the Jaguars avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
