Centralia hasn't had much luck against Mater Dei recently, but that could start to change on Wednesday. The Orphans will challenge the Knights at 4:30 p.m. Centralia is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.5 runs per game this season.
On Tuesday, Centralia got the win against Cahokia by a conclusive 13-1. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Orphans.
Dax Snow looked comfortable as he struck out eight batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits (and not a single walk). He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks any time he's pitched this season.
At the plate, Deacon Snow was a standout: he got on base in all three of his plate appearances with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. That home run marked the first that he launched this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Nolan Pryor, who scored two runs and stole two bases while going 1-for-1.
Centralia hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. The team has now struck out at least two batters in three consecutive games.
Meanwhile, Mater Dei fought the good fight in their extra-innings matchup against Civic Memorial on Tuesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Eagles by a score of 6-5. The Knights' loss continues a trend for the squad, making it four in a row.
Trey Winkeler was cooking despite his team's loss, going 2-for-4 with one triple and one run. Another player making a difference was Hayden Melone, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one RBI.
Centralia now has a winning record of 7-6. As for Mater Dei, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-7.
Centralia's speedy runners might be the difference in Wednesday's contest. The Orphans have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.2 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Mater Dei, though, as they've been averaging only 0.4 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Centralia continue to outrun the ball?
Centralia might still be hurting after the 14-6 loss they got from Mater Dei in their previous matchup back in April of 2023. Can the Orphans avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
