The Poway Titans typically have all the answers at home, but on Wednesday the Mission Hills Grizzlies proved too difficult a challenge. They took down the Titans 71-56. Given Mission Hills' advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 20th, while Poway is ranked 107th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Kyara Walter was her usual excellent self, scoring 21 points. She continues to roll, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Maria Gorbushin, who scored ten points along with five assists and three steals.
When it comes to explaining why Poway lost, one person who can't be blamed is Katelyn Johnson. Despite the final result, she scored 31 points. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Johnson has scored all season. Ari Mason was another key contributor, scoring 11 points.
Mission Hills has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven matches, which provided a nice bump to their 13-7 record this season. As for Poway, their loss ended a 12-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 13-6.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Mission Hills will be staying on the road on Friday to face off against San Marcos at 5:30 p.m. on January 19th. As for Poway, they will square off against Rancho Bernardo at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
