Pueblo County is 0-6 against Discovery Canyon since October of 2016 but things could change on Saturday. The Hornets will head out to challenge the Thunder at 10:00 a.m. Pueblo County is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.6 runs per game this season.
While Pueblo County's win against Pueblo East wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Hornets sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 6-4 victory over the Eagles on Thursday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Hornets have posted against the Eagles since September 13, 2022.
Kamdyn Toussaint spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four runs (all of which were unearned) on two hits and racked up 13 Ks.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Brooklyn Markus, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Eruka Peterson, who went 2-for-3 with three stolen bases and one run.
Pueblo County hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. They are a perfect 10-0 when they post two or more strikeouts.
Meanwhile, Discovery Canyon came up short against Cheyenne Mountain on Thursday and fell 5-1.
Bella Holcomb put in work no matter where she played. She pitched seven innings while giving up just one earned (and four unearned) runs off six hits. Holcomb was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with one RBI.
Holcomb wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Ruby Campbell, who went 2-for-3 with one run and one double. Lia Marrufo also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.
Pueblo County's record now sits at 14-6. As for Discovery Canyon, their defeat dropped their record down to 6-13.
Saturday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Pueblo County hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .390. However, it's not like Discovery Canyon struggles in that department as they've averaged .319. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
