The Gretna East Griffins suffered their biggest loss yet this season on Saturday. They were beaten by Omaha Central 67-33. While losing is never fun, Gretna East can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Nebraska basketball rankings (they are ranked 189th, while Omaha Central is ranked 20th).
Despite the loss, Gretna East saw an underclassman step up: Drayke Brown scored 11 points. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Brown has scored all season.
Gretna East struggled to get the ball back on offense and finished the game with only three offensive rebounds. They were crushed by their opponents in that department as Omaha Central pulled down ten offensive rebounds.
Omaha Central's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Daleron Thomas, who scored 19 points. Another player making a difference was D.j. Sterling, who scored ten points along with six rebounds and five steals.
Gretna East has been struggling recently, as they've lost six of their last eight matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-8 record this season. As for Omaha Central, the win (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 12-3.
Gretna East will head out on the road to face off against Columbus at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday. That game will pit two of the most dominant guards against one another: Griffin Micek and Talan Hovie. As for Omaha Central, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Skutt Catholic at 7:15 p.m. on Friday.
