Liberty and Heritage are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2021, but likely not for long. The Lions will be playing at home against the Patriots at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Heritage will take on a team with plenty of momentum: Liberty extended their winning streak to seven on Saturday. The Lions blew past Soledad 11-3. With that win, the Lions brought their scoring average up to 6.3 runs per game.
Alejandro Hernandez-Leypon looked comfortable as he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Sean Kelly, who went 1-for-2 with three RBI, two runs, and one stolen base. Another player making a difference was Rane Miller, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base.
Liberty kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits in three consecutive matchups.
Meanwhile, Heritage won against Antioch on Tuesday with seven runs and they decided to stick to that run total again on Thursday. The Patriots were the clear victors by a 7-1 margin over the Panthers. The Patriots haven't had any issues with the Panthers recently, as the game was their seventh consecutive victory against them.
JJ Kinnaird made a splash no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching four innings while giving up just one earned run off five hits. Kinnaird was even better at the plate, going a perfect 1-for-1 with three stolen bases, two runs, and one double.
In other pitching news, Kalil Gray looked comfortable as he tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. What's more, he posted three strikeouts, the most he's had since back in April.
Back at the plate, Alonzo Alvarez was incredible, going a perfect 4-for-4 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.
Liberty pushed their record up to 16-6 with the win, which was their fourth straight on the road. The road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.8 runs on average over those games. As for Heritage, their win bumped their record up to 18-4.
Liberty took their victory against Heritage in their previous meeting back in May of 2024 by a conclusive 11-0 score. Do the Lions have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Patriots turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
