The Russellville Indians will venture away from home to square off against the Iberia Rangers at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. Russellville is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.4 runs per game this season.
Russellville easily dispatched Cuba on Wednesday, but unfortunately both the margin and the ultimate result were a different story in this one. The Indians fell just short of New Bloomfield by a score of 8-6 on Thursday. The Indians haven't had much luck with the Wildcats recently, as the team has come up short the last three times they've met.
Russellville saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was K'Lea Basnett, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI, two doubles, and one run. Another was Audra Whittle, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one run.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Iberia). Everything went their way against Crocker on Friday as they made off with a 15-4 victory. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Rangers considering their one-run performance the game before.
Jaylyn Piggott made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out six over five innings pitched. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-5 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. That double was her first of the season.
In other batting news, Kily McElroy was a standout: she went 3-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and two doubles. Those three hits gave her a new career-high. Kya Yoakum was another key player, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with two runs, one triple, and two RBI.
Iberia kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in eight consecutive contests.
Iberia now has a winning record of 5-4. As for Russellville, their loss dropped their record down to 12-7.
Monday's matchup will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Russellville hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .334. However, it's not like Iberia struggles in that department as they've averaged .328. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Russellville suffered a grim 13-3 defeat to Iberia in their previous meeting back in October of 2023. Can the Indians avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
