Highland and Palmyra are an even 4-4 against one another since September of 2017, but likely not for long. The Cougars will welcome the Panthers at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Highland has three straight victories, Palmyra has six straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
On Thursday, Highland made easy work of Clark County and carried off a 15-4 win. The Cougars might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won seven matchups by ten runs or more this season.
Calyn Mathes was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching 4.2 innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off three hits. Mathes was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one run.
In other batting news, Akyrah Lewis was a standout: she went a perfect 2-for-2 with three RBI, one triple, and one double. Those two hits gave her a new career-high. Delilah Megee was another key player, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.
Highland always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .667. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Clark County only posted an OBP of .348.
Meanwhile, it was a proper cat-fight when Palmyra duked it out with Montgomery County on Saturday. The Panthers fell 5-2 to the Wildcats.
Palmyra saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Morgan Pillars, who went 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Palmyra's loss dropped their record down to 1-7. As for Highland, their victory bumped their record up to 8-3.
Palmyra's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Highland hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .370. It's a different story for Palmyra, though, as they've only averaged .205. Will they be able to contain Highland's hitters?
Everything went Highland's way against Palmyra in their previous matchup back in September of 2024, as Highland made off with a 10-1 win. Will the Cougars repeat their success, or do the Panthers have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
