The Portage Mustangs put another one in the bag on Wednesday to keep their perfect season alive. The stars were shining brightly for them in a 48-31 victory over Cambria Heights. Given Portage's advantage in MaxPreps' Pennsylvania basketball rankings (they are ranked 12th, while Cambria Heights is ranked 264th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Jenna Burkett was her usual excellent self, scoring 16 points along with six steals and five rebounds. The contest was her sixth in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Alex Chobany, who scored 13 points along with six rebounds.
Several Highlanders players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Sienna Kirsch, who scored 13 points along with five rebounds and three steals. Kirsch hasn't dropped below two steals for six straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Gracey Vinglish, who scored eight points along with nine rebounds and three blocks.
Portage pushed their record up to 9-0 with that win, which was their fourth straight on the road. As for Cambria Heights, they have traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost three of their last four matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-4 record this season.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Portage will be home for the holidays to greet Conemaugh Township at 7:15 p.m. on Friday. Cambria Heights will be home for the holidays to greet Northern Cambria at 7:15 p.m. on Friday. Northern Cambria comes in still looking for their first win of the season.
