The Clovis Cougars will take on the Stockdale Mustangs in a tournament on Tuesday.
Clovis fought the good fight in their extra-innings matchup against Bradshaw Christian on Monday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They took an 8-5 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Pride.
Peyton Barsotti made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-5 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Nick Caballero, who went 2-for-4 with one triple.
Meanwhile, Stockdale waltzed into their contest on Monday with five straight wins... but they left with six. They were the clear victors by an 8-1 margin over the Warriors. The Mustangs might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won six games by seven runs or more this season.
Andres Ochoa tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only two hits while striking out six over five innings pitched. Those six strikeouts gave him a new career-high.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Brayden Gutierrez, who went 3-for-4 with one home run, one stolen base, and two RBI. That's the most hits he has posted since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was Charlie Ryder, who scored two runs while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.
Clovis has traveled a rocky road recently, having lost eight of their last nine matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-12 record this season. Those defeats can't be blamed on the team's hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 6.4 runs over those games. As for Stockdale, their win bumped their record up to 14-4.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Tuesday. Clovis hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.7 home runs per game. However, it's not like Stockdale struggles in that department as they've been averaging 1 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
Clovis couldn't quite get it done against Stockdale in their previous matchup back in March as they fell 11-6. Will the Cougars have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the match for a full breakdown of the game, commentary, and other baseball content.
