The Mira Mesa Marauders will head out on the road to take on the Steele Canyon Cougars at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Both come into the game bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Mira Mesa lost a heartbreaker the last time they played Santana, but it's fair to say they got their revenge given the result of Monday's match. Mira Mesa never let Santana get on the board and left with an 8-0 victory on Monday. The Marauders not only won on Monday, but they posted their biggest win since May 14, 2024.
Ziggy Avinion was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit over six innings pitched. Avinion was also big at the plate, scoring two runs while going 1-for-3. Those runs were his first of the season.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Nathaniel Widelski, who scored two runs and stole Two bases. while going 2-for-3. That's the most stolen bases he has posted since back in May of 2024. Another player making a difference was Blake Rothrock, who scored two runs and stole Two bases. while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.
Mira Mesa always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .556. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, Steele Canyon had to endure a 24-game losing streak dating back to last season, but that streak is no more. They came out on top against San Ysidro by a score of 4-1 on Monday. Steele Canyon's hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
Hunter Haase spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned run on four hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Julian Cervantes was excellent, going 2-for-3 with one triple and one RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Gavin Caha, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base and one RBI.
Mira Mesa now has a winning record of 3-2. As for Steele Canyon, their win (their first of the season) made their record 1-4.
Mira Mesa's speedy runners might be the difference in Wednesday's contest. Mira Mesa has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 4.2 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Steele Canyon, though, as they've been averaging only 0.4 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Mira Mesa continue to outrun the ball?
Mira Mesa took their victory against Steele Canyon in their previous matchup back in March of 2019 by a conclusive 13-7. Does Mira Mesa have another victory up their sleeve, or will Steele Canyon turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
