The Mesa Verde Mavericks will take on the Woodland Christian Cardinals at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Mesa Verde is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10.2 runs per game this season.
Mesa Verde is probably headed into the match with a chip on their shoulder considering Rio Vista just ended the team's three-game winning streak on Thursday. They took a 5-2 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Rams.
Mesa Verde saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Gavin Nelson, who went 2-for-3 with one run.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Woodland Christian). Everything went their way against Golden Sierra on Thursday as they made off with a 21-1 victory. The result was nothing new for the Cardinals, who have now won 17 contests by six runs or more so far this season.
Jordan Villanueva was a major factor no matter where he played. He tossed three innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. Villanueva was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with three runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games he's played.
In other batting news, Armaan Badhesha was a standout: he went 3-for-4 with three runs, four RBI, and two doubles. Those four RBI gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Jayden Badhesha, who went 2-for-4 with one home run, four runs, and two RBI.
Woodland Christian kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 23 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.
Woodland Christian has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four games. That somehow still isn't as good as their 20-6 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.8 runs over those games. As for Mesa Verde, their defeat dropped their record down to 18-6.
Tuesday's match might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Mesa Verde has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .457. However, it's not like Woodland Christian struggles in that department as they've averaged .548. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
