After flying high against Santa Fe Christian last Saturday, Torrey Pines came back down to earth. The Torrey Pines Falcons fell 60-52 to the Mater Dei Catholic Crusaders on Monday. The Falcons' defeat signaled the end of their six-game winning streak.
Several Falcons players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Katie Tal, who posted 14 points and seven rebounds. Tal is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last three games she's played. Charley Pegg was another key player, putting up seven points in addition to nine boards and five assists.
Even though they lost, Torrey Pines smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 13 offensive boards in seven consecutive games.
Leading Mater Dei Catholic to victory were Promise Martin and Jordyn Worley. Martin dropped a double-double on 16 points and 13 rebounds, while Worley almost dropped a double-double on 16 points and nine boards. Mater Dei Catholic is undefeated when Martin posts ten or more rebounds, but 6-8 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Ana Karen Lacave, who put up eight points.
Torrey Pines' loss dropped their record down to 14-6. As for Mater Dei Catholic, the victory (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 9-8.
Torrey Pines wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 70-34 win against Oceanside on the 22nd. Mater Dei Catholic has also already played their next matchup, a 45-33 defeat against Victory Christian Academy on the 22nd.
