Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Hooks). They claimed a resounding 65-3 win over the Hughes Springs Mustangs. The final result isn't all that surprising considering the Hornets' considerable advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 418th, while the Mustangs are ranked 993rd).
Ripken Birdwell had another great game (as he tends to do), throwing for 218 yards and a pair of TDs while completing 81.8% of his passes, and also rushing for 37 yards and one touchdown. What's more, he racked up 161.9 passer rating, the most he's had since back in October of 2024. Hooks also got help from Jay Smith, who showed off his sure hands for 114 receiving yards.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: Hooks was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 366 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've managed all season.
Hooks didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Wiley Melton and Justin Daniels. Melton also made five total tackles, which is notable because Hooks is undefeated when he posts at least three total tackles, but 1-2 otherwise. Daniels got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.
The victory was the third in a row for Hooks, bringing their record up to 4-2. Those wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 46.7 points over those games. As for Hughes Springs, they now have a losing record of 3-4.
Coincidentally, Hooks and Hughes Springs will both be playing Daingerfield the next time they take the field. The Hornets will host the Tigers at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, while the Mustangs will head out to face them at 7:00 p.m. on the 24th.
