The La Costa Canyon Mavericks had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 2 goals), and they went ahead and made it four on Thursday. They had just enough and edged Carlsbad out 2-1. The victory was all the more spectacular given La Costa Canyon's disadvantage in MaxPreps' California soccer rankings (they are ranked 415th, while Carlsbad is ranked 195th).
La Costa Canyon was led to victory by the tag-team duo of
Meena Shahri and
Avery Baker, who scored both of La Costa Canyon's goals. The pair have combined for a total of seven so far this season.
La Costa Canyon pushed their record up to 6-9-1 with that win, which was their third straight on the road. As for Carlsbad, they have not been sharp recently as the team has lost three of their last four contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-5-5 record this season.
La Costa Canyon will head out on the road to square off against Coronado at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Carlsbad does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
