Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in high school football. America's resource for high school sports continues the tradition to close out the 2021 season by naming the top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and individual excellence, in addition to local and state accolades.
Hudson Clement of
Martinsburg (W. Va.) is the 2021 MaxPreps West Virginia High School Football Player of the Year. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound receiver helped the Panthers go 13-1 and capture the Class 3A state title, Martinsburg's ninth football championship since 2010.
In a 62-21 win over Huntington in the title game, Clement caught eight footballs for 175 yards and four touchdowns and ran it seven times for 41 yards and another four scores. Clement's eight touchdowns sets a new Super Six record, replacing the old mark of five set by Wheeling Central's Gino Bianconi (2011) and Ross Comis of Madonna (2012).
For the year, Clement caught 87 balls for 1,709 yards and 23 touchdowns. The 2020 3A Honorable Mention All-State receiver also ran the ball 18 times for 175 yards and five scores. Through the semifinal win, Clement was credited with 65 tackles, three interceptions and three fumble recoveries. He returned nine kickoffs for 152 yards and eight punts for 141 yards and a touchdown.
West Virginia freshman offensive lineman Wyatt Milum was the 2020 MaxPreps West Virginia Football Player of the Year after helping Spring Valley to a 5-2 record and the final No. 1 ranking in the state.
Each state's MaxPreps Player of the Year will be considered for inclusion on the MaxPreps All-America Team, which will be released in early January.
