With the track & field season just getting underway, Carlmont High's Justine Fedronic is wasting little time making her mark.
Competing in the 800-meter race at the Arcadia Invitational Saturday, Fedronic shaved a full second off her personal best time and posted a 2:08.08, the fastest outdoor time posted in the 800 in the United States so far this year.
The fast paced race saw Fedronic take the lead with 300 meters to go and the sophomore had to fend off a strong challenge from Esperanza's Emily Dunn, last year's state meet runner-up, down the stretch. Dunn would finish just two-tenths of a second behind Fedronic in a field that featured six of the top seven runners from last year's state final.
In other competition by Central Coast Section athletes from last weekend's meet, fellow Carlmont standout Brad Surh won the boys seeded mile in 4:18.65 after being snubbed from the invitational mile race.
St. Francis' Casey Roche posted a jump of 17 feet in the pole vault to handily win the event with Los Gatos' Nico Weiler taking second at 16-1. Castilleja's Tori Anthony, the national record holder at 14-2 1/2, easily won the girls pole vault at 13-7.
Baseball
Scotts Valley High's Ryan Fontana is in a giving mood these days.
In his first start on the mound since tossing a perfect game on March 30, a 6-0 gem over Harbor that saw Fontana strike out 10 of the 21 batters he faced and retired in order, Fontana gave up a leadoff double against Mountain View on Saturday.
That was all the charity he was about to allow.
Fontana tossed his third-consecutive complete game and second-straight shutout in a 5-0 Falcons' win over Mountain View. Fontana's scoreless innings streak now stands at 18. The senior hurler is 5-1 on the season with an impressive 1.40 ERA, having struck out 33 batters in 30 innings of work.
In other CCS action on the diamonds, El Camino High defeated crosstown rival South San Francisco, 2-0, in the opening game of the South San Francisco Easter Tournament on Saturday in what will likely be the only game of the year between the two teams.
In other tournament games Saturday, Sequoia rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh to edge Gunn, 3-2, while Aragon defeated Hillsdale, 10-6, and Concord, 16-2.
Menlo cashed in on a sixth-inning error that was converted into three unearned runs to defeat Menlo-Atherton, 4-3.
Softball
Kassi Hoelper's three-hit shutout Friday led Sequoia to a 3-0 win over Menlo-Atherton as the Cherokees moved into a share of first place in the Peninsula Athletic League Ocean Division with Woodside, while Terra Nova upended Jefferson, 12-3.
In another CCS upset, Alex Bell's sacrifice fly plated Anna Harbart with the winning run as Pacific Grove stunned Monterey, 3-2, in 10 innings. Tristen Banales' two-run single in the top of the ninth inning broke a scoreless tie and gave Pacific Grove a 2-0 lead before Monterey rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth.
Sarah Solis struck out nine and gave up just two hits for Notre Dame in a 7-0 win over King City in the first round of the Steinbeck Classic in Salinas. Kelly Mast sparked Notre Dame's offense with a 2-for-3 effort that included a triple while Nicole Grummons and Maile Kim each added a triple. In other tournament action, Brittin Larsen led Alvarez over North County 6-0 pitching seven shutout innings and adding a double on offense.
Lacrosse
Stevenson improved to 9-2 on the season as Cooper Kehoe tallied four goals and two assists in a 9-2 win over Thatcher of Ojai. Stevenson's Tyler Allen added two goals while Scott Munro, Logan Allen, and Michael Magruder scored one goal each.
