The Cuero Gobblers will take on the Sinton Pirates at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Cuero knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 31 points or more in their past 12 matchups -- so hopefully Sinton likes a good challenge.
Cuero is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Friday. They put the hurt on Rockport-Fulton with a sharp 48-27 victory. That's two games straight that the Gobblers have won by exactly 21 points.
Cuero had a senior duo take command as Jaxxon Marie threw for 257 yards and two TDs while completing 72.7% of his passes and Walker Dietze picked up 135 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Cuero didn't let much get past them through the air: they limited Rockport-Fulton to a completion percentage of just 50%. The Gobblers have been improving in that area: they had allowed a completion percentage of 0.65 earlier this season, but they've only allowed one of 0.65 in their last three games.
Cuero didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. The team can thank three different players for their defensive prowess: Aiden Strecker, Jossiah Taylor, and Jordan Jones, who each picked up one interception apiece.
Meanwhile, Sinton had already won five in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 45.4 points) and they went ahead and made it six on Friday. They came out on top against the Texans by a score of 35-26. Given the Pirates' advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 115th, while the Texans are ranked 350th) , the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Cuero better keep an eye on Marcos Zapata. He was instrumental in Sinton's win, rushing for 158 yards and three scores on only seven carries. Those 158 rushing yards gave Zapata a new career-high. Mykha Green also helped out as he racked up 124 rushing yards.
Cuero's record is now 12-1. As for Sinton, their record now sits at an identical 12-1.
Friday's contest might be decided on the ground. Cuero has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 217.7 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Sinton struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 321.6 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's game turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Cuero won a matchup that couldn't have been any closer when the teams last played back in October, slipping by Sinton 56-55. One of the biggest obstacles the team faced in that game was Green, who rushed for 269 yards and six TDs while picking up 8.4 yards per carry, and also picked up 40 receiving yards. Now that he's got a second chance to win this matchup, will the Gobblers still be able to contain Green? Check MaxPreps.com after the match to find out.
