High school football rankings: Bishop Gorman takes over No. 1 spot in MaxPreps Top 25

Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, Nev.) claims the No. 1 spot in this week's MaxPreps Top 25 high school football rankings after taking down St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) 38-28 in a matchup of the nation's top-ranked teams. Junior quarterback Ace Amina threw for 212 yards and four touchdowns in his second career start. 

The Gaels jumped out to a 21-0 halftime lead but the Braves roared back in the second half eventually tying the game at 28-28 with 10:01 left. Bishop Gorman responded by scoring the final 10 points to improve to 2-0. Up next is a trip to Florida to face five-star Miami pledge A'mir Sears and Columbus (Miami) in the Broward County Football Showcase on Saturday. 

St. John Bosco dropped four spots to No. 5 in this week's MaxPreps Top 25 and look to bounce back against Roman Catholic (Philadelphia, Pa.) on Friday. Fletch Palmer made his first career start for No. 6 Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) and led the Eagles to a 27-0 win over Jones (Orlando, Fla.). Palmer completed 21 of 31 passes for 253 yards and two touchdowns. Up next is No. 8 Centennial (Corona, Calif.) on Friday in a rematch of last year's CIF Southern Section Division 1 championship game. 

Jaden Jefferson and Quentin Hale led Centennial to a 41-21 win over Servite (Anaheim, Calif.). Jefferson completed 19 of 24 passes for 296 yards and two touchdowns to go with 12 carries for 92 yards and two more scores. Hale caught eight balls for 155 yards and two scores. 

Texas gets underway this week and the showdown to watch in the Lone Star State features No. 10 Duncanville and No. 16 Allen at Eagle Stadium in the MaxPreps Game of the Week. It will be streamed Friday on the NFHS Network at 7 p.m. local time. 

West Boca Raton (Boca Raton, Fla.) and East St. Louis (Ill.) were the only new teams to join this week's MaxPreps Top 25. 

At No. 22 is West Boca Raton after beating previously-ranked American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.) 24-7. East St. Louis took down Mt. Carmel (Chicago, Ill.) 42-23 in a matchup of the top two teams in the state and go from unranked to No. 24 in this week's national rankings.
