Video: Top 25 national baseball rankings Texas postseason heats up and gives us a new No. 1 team.
With two weeks left in the Texas high school baseball season, it's time to recognize the play of the Argyle Eagles with the No. 1 spot in the MaxPreps Top 50 national high school baseball rankings.
Argyle, the No. 1 team in the final Top 50 in 2018, replaces IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) at the top of the 2019 rankings thanks to an impressive run through the Texas Class 4A playoffs. In eight playoff games, all wins, Argyle has outscored opponents 90-7 including two games won on no-hitters. As the Eagles have gone deeper into the playoffs, their wins have become more lopside, beting Brownwood 22-0 and 11-1 and Canyon 19-1 and 9-0.
Additionally, Argyle's lone loss was against Carroll (Southlake, Texas), a team that won the Class 6A state championship last year and reached the Region 1 finals this week.
Meanwhile, IMG Academy has not played a postseason game this year and its lone loss came against Blessed Trinity (Roswell, Ga.), a team that lost in the semifinals of the Georgia Class 4A semifinals to Denmark, which then lost to Northside (Columbus) in the finals.
IMG Academy drops to No. 2 and can move back to No. 1 should Argyle lose a game along the way. However, Argyle's recent play made it necessary to reward the Eagles for their performance in the postseason.
Georgetown (Texas) and New Hanover (Wilmington, N.C.), both dropped in the rankings after losing a game last week. Georgetown lost to Santa Fe in its regional semifinal series, but won the next two games and advanced to the regional finals. New Hanover, meanwhile, lost to D.H. Conley in its semifinal series but advanced to the Class 3A state championship game.
Georgetown dropped to No. 11 this week while New Hanover fell to No. 12. Cypress moves up to No. 3 while Blanchard (Okla.) is No. 4.
Dropped out: No. 21 The Woodlands (Texas), No. 34 St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), No. 36 Hillgrove (Powder Springs, Ga.), No. 38 Flanagan (Pembroke Pines, Fla.), No. 44 Calvary Christian Academy (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.).
Player of the Week: Nick Barnes, Farragut. In the Tennessee Class 3A state tournament, Barnes had a home run in a win over Bartlett and two home runs in a win over Summit in the quarterfinals.
Game of the Week: New Hanover 2, D.H. Conley, 1. The two teams were tied at 0-0 through the seventh inning of the third game in the series. New Hanover had won the first game 5-0 on a no-hitter from Blake Walston while D.H. Conley won the second game 10-0. Conley scored in the top of the eighth on a controversial play in which Alex Sniffen missed the tag on a play at third, according to the call by the umpire. Walston argued the call and was thrown out of the game. Conley eventually got an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead. However, New Hanover rallied in the bottom of the frame and got a two-run single by Sniffen with the bases loaded to win the game and advance to the Class 3A state finals against Marvin Ridge.
Game to Watch: Miami Springs vs. Jesuit in Florida Class 5A quarterfinals. Miami Springs has been the surprise team in Class 6A this year, going 26-1 after finishing 11-6 last year. Jesuit, is the longtime powerhouse, winning no fewer than 19 games in a season during the past 14 seasons, winning a state title in 2014.
Streaks: Silo (Okla.) still holds the active streak at 40 while Blanchard is second at 39. Newman Catholic (Iowa) opened its season last week with two wins and has 28 wins in a row dating back to the 2018 season.
