Winning a high school volleyball state championship is always a challenge regardless of the state, classification or matchups along the way.
Today, we examine the toughest state tournament brackets in 2026. Hundreds of classifications across 50 states and the District of Columbia were narrowed down to the 10 most daunting.
Determining factors include MaxPreps Top 25 teams in the field, quality of favorites and top contenders, depth and quality of the tournament field and overall difficulty of capturing the championship.
Read on for a full rundown of the top 10 state tournaments in high school volleyball below.
1. California Open Division Contenders: No. 1
Mater Dei (Santa Ana), No. 2
Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth), No. 14
Cathedral Catholic (San Diego), No. 15
Torrey Pines (San Diego),
Archbishop Mitty (San Jose),
Marymount (Los Angeles),
Harvard-Westlake (Studio City),
Mira Costa (Manhattan Beach),
Oaks Christian (Westlake Village),
Saint Francis (Mountain View),
Branson (Ross),
Folsom,
Rocklin Rundown: Whoever survives this bracket will have earned the state title and their place in the rankings. Mater Dei and Sierra Canyon have been at or near the top of the MaxPreps Top 25 all season but Cathedral Catholic and Marymount have state titles in the past five years and Torrey Pines is no easy out. Archbishop Mitty has been the NorCal representative in three of the past five years.
2. Texas Conference 6A Division 1
Contenders: No. 5
Allen, No. 13
Duncanville, No. 17
Hebron (Carrollton),
Flower Mound,
Byron Nelson (Trophy Club),
McKinney Boyd (McKinney),
V.R. Eaton (Fort Worth),
Plano West (Plano),
Plano East (Plano),
Wylie,
Lake Travis (Austin),
Eastlake (El Paso),
Plano East (Plano),
Plano West (Plano),
Wylie,
Mansfield,
Grand Oaks (Spring) Rundown: The divisions won't be broken out until after district play but based on enrollment numbers the above list is a gauntlet. Allen has been the best UIL team all year but Duncanville and Hebron have quality wins. Byron Nelson is the two-time defending state champion while Flower Mound and McKinney Boyd are two that can stand toe-to-toe with the best of the best.
3. Indiana — Class 4A
Rundown: A deep field is going to produce some season-ending drama in sectional play. Those that advance to regionals and semi-state will be battle-tested. Carroll saw its 72-match win streak come to an end this season but a three-peat is still within reach. Yorktown is young but talented, Hamilton Southeastern won two titles prior to Carroll's current run and Westfield has only lost to Carroll and HSE.
4. Illinois — Class 4A
Rundown: Mother McAuley and Marist have already played two epic three-set matches with the Mighty Macs winning both. The RedHawks are the two-time defending class champion. The pair likely will meet in sectional play. Benet Academy has a win over McAuley while Joliet West has battled this season and Lyons has out-of-state wins down the stretch.
5. Florida — Open Division
2025 champion: N/A
Contenders: No. 4
Orangewood Christian (Maitland), No. 18
Calvary Christian (Clearwater),
Plant (Tampa),
Winter Haven,
Gulliver Prep (Miami),
DeLand,
Archbishop McCarthy (Southwest Ranches),
Beachside (St. Johns),
Santa Fe (Alachua),
First Baptist Academy (Naples),
The First Academy (Orlando),
Oviedo Rundown: The inaugural Open Division championship is headlined by a pair of MaxPreps Top 25 teams. However, Winter Haven and Ovideo are reigning champions and Plant lost to Winter Haven in the Class 7A final. Gulliver Prep owns a win over Calvary Christian and The First Academy has been tested out-of-state.
6. Michigan — Division 1
Rundown: Marian and Mercy have each spent time in the MaxPreps Top 25 this season and have combined for six of the last seven state titles. But it's premature to pencil them into the final as Hudsonville and South Lyon East are in the expanded rankings. Clarkston is 20-2 with the two losses to Marian and Mercy.
7. Nebraska — Class BRundown: Everyone is still chasing defending champion Norris. Gretna is young but has four Division I commits and has been a giant-killer this season with wins over Norris, Papillion-LaVista South and Waverly. Skutt Catholic is two years removed from winning its ninth straight Class B crown.
8. Kentucky
Rundown: The Rockets are looking for state title No. 26 in the state's winner-take-all bracket. But everyone has a puncher's chance. Mercy, Notre Dame Academy, Sacred Heart and St. Henry all have won titles since 2014.
9. Missouri — Class 5
Rundown: The defending champions have put together an impressive season without injured Nebraska commit
Shaye Witherspoon. Two of Lee's Summit West's losses are to Lafayette and Jackson. Incarnate Word Academy recently beat Lafayette and was tested at the Nike Tournament of Champions earlier in the month.
10. Arizona — Class 6A
Rundown: Xavier College Prep is looking for a three-peat but has dealt with injuries to MaxPreps All-American
Tessa Larkin that have allowed teams like O'Connor, Perry and Casteel to close the gap. O'Connor's 6-foot-4 middle
Kristen Sheehy is a game-changer.
