When it comes to handling photo assignments, photographer
Louis Lopez is a seasoned veteran.
Lopez, who lives in Southern California and was one of the first freelance photographers to join the
MaxPreps Professional Photographers' Network nearly 13 years ago, regularly has his images published in national publications while covering sports at the high school, college and pro levels.
So when it came to handling two photo shoots in May for the MaxPreps Preseason Top 25 football project, Lopez did not need much guidance.
The first shoot he handled was with the
St. John Bosco team, and he staged this one in historic downtown Bellflower along Laurel Street. He photographed nine top players along with head coach Jason Negro.
Lopez received permission from the city's economic development department to do the shoot in the downtown area.
"We shot in alleys and pretty much stopped traffic during the shoot," Lopez said. "It was definitely a benefit getting the city to clear us to shoot in the area."
For this photo shoot, Lopez used color changing filters on his strobes to achieve a distinct look for the images he took of the players and coach.
"Everyone was great to work with and they were especially open to my ideas and direction," he said.
The second photo shoot Lopez completed was with
Centennial High School, which is located in Corona, Calif. The shoot was held at the school's on-campus football stadium and involved eight top players and head coach Matt Logan.
Lopez and his assistant used a remote light setup that was all mobile for this shoot, which allowed them to move freely and quickly to different locations around the stadium to take posed photos.
