Watch Kelsey Plum lead La Jolla Country Day to a state title.It's safe to say that the rise of
Kelsey Plum to the top of the NCAA career scoring list did not catch everyone off guard.
"Plum is a point guard who's as big a threat to score as to dish," wrote MaxPreps girls basketball editor Clay Kallam. "She always steps up in big games. Fundamentally sound and extremely competitive, she'll be a prize in this summer's recruiting wars."
That was in April of 2012, right after Plum's junior season at
La Jolla Country Day (La Jolla, Calif.).
Five years later, the 5-foot-8 senior is the all-time leading scorer in NCAA women's basketball. Plum scored 57 points Saturday to bring her career total to 3,397, surpassing legendary Jackie Stiles of Missouri State (known then as Southwest Missouri State) for the top spot.
Plum is averaging 31.6 points, 5.2 assists and 5.2 rebounds for the Huskies this season. She led the program to the Final Four as a junior.
As a senior at La Jolla Country Day in 2012-13, Plum averaged 27.1 points, 8.5 rebounds, 3.7 steals and 3.2 assists per game. She finished with 2,247 career points at the San Diego-area school.
The Torreys went 103-22 during her four-year career and won the Division IV state title in 2011-12.
