Two of the more decorated boys athletic programs in the Midwest are at the top of the MaxPreps Cup Boys standings after the Fall Sports Season.
St. Xavier (Louisville, Ky.) and Christian Brothers (St. Louis) are tied with 590 points, putting them 30 points ahead of No. 3 Highland Park (Dallas). St. Xavier has 180 state championships in school history, including a boys soccer state title during the fall. Christian Brothers, meanwhile, has been ranked the top athletic program in the St. Louis area by the Post Dispatch three times in the past nine years.
Among girls sports programs, North Allegheny (Wexford, Pa.) comes in at the top with 741 points, while Xavier College Prep (Phoenix) is No. 2 with 621 points.
The MaxPreps Cup is a formula that attempts to recognize the top high school athletic programs in the nation. The formula includes points awarded to state champions and state runners-up. Points are awarded based on size of state, popularity of sport, enrollment level of the sport in which the state title game was played and the number of schools that participated in that enrollment level. Points are also awarded based on placement in national rankings.
MaxPreps has already recognized the Top 100 athletic programs in the nation as well as the top five teams in each state. Following are the top 25 boys programs, the top 25 girls programs, the top 25 medium-sized schools, the top 25 small schools, the top 10 public schools, the top 10 private schools and the top 10 teams in five different regions of the nation.
