The high school football season in Georgia came to a close over the weekend with
Mill Creek (Hoschton) beating
Carrollton in the GHSA Class AAAAAAA state championship game at Georgia State University's Center Parc Stadium. That victory helped propel the Hawks to the No. 1 ranking in the final state MaxPreps Top 25.
Mill Creek used the long ball to upend Carrollton 70-35 to claim its first state championship. The 105 points scored between the two teams broke the record for total points scored in a Georgia championship game.
Led by 2022 MaxPreps Georgia High School Football Player of the Year
Caleb Downs, the Hawks took a 49-28 halftime advantage into the locker room. The game saw 11 plays of 40 yards or more.
Downs, who has committed to Alabama, scored three times while junior running back
Cameron Robinson added 252 yards on the ground and three touchdowns.
Freshman
Julian Lewis threw for 531 yards and five scores for Carrollton, which finishes the season ranked No. 3. Trojan running back
Bryce Hicks and
Caleb Odom caught 13 passes between them for 357 yards and three touchdowns in the title game.
One of six Georgia high school football programs to finish the season undefeated,
Langston Hughes (Fairburn) edged
Gainesville 35-28 for the Class AAAAAA state championship, finishing the season No. 2.
