A familiar face returns to the top of the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 High School Baseball National Rankings, presented by Milk, as the Sumrall Bobcats climb back to the No. 1 ranking following Rockwall-Heath's elimination from the Texas 4A state playoffs.
The Hawks held on to the No. 1 spot last week despite losing their first game of the season. Despite the loss, Rockwall-Heath advanced in the playoffs and still had a chance to win a state title. That chance ended, however, when Wakeland swept Rockwall-Heath in two games.
Sumrall, meanwhile, has been through with its season for nearly two weeks after winning its third straight Mississippi 3A state championship. The key for Sumrall was that its only loss came against a team, Oak Grove, that it also had defeated earlier in the season. Oak Grove reached the semifinals of the 6A state playoffs in Mississippi.
While several states have yet to complete their state playoffs, including Texas, it appears unlikely that any team will knock Sumrall out of the top spot. Walsh Jesuit had the best chance of moving to the top, but the Warriors lost their state-final game to Alder in the Ohio Division II playoffs.
This week's rankings also include "The Next 25," featuring the teams that are close to breaking into the Xcellent 25.
