Teegan Haines of
McPherson intercepted five passes – returning two for touchdowns – in a 26-3 win over Buhler in the second round of the Class 4A high school football playoffs in Kansas on Friday.
Haines, a 6-foot-4, 200-pound linebacker with offers from Missouri Southern and Butler Community College, entered the game without an interception this season. See all five of his interceptions in the video.
Both of Haines' pick-sixes came in the fourth quarter. The first came with McPherson leading 6-3 with 8:56 to play as he contested a catch and ripped the ball out of a Buhler receiver's hands before racing 31 yards to the end zone to give the Bullpups a 12-3 lead.
With 4:41 left in the game, Haines stepped in the way of another Buhler pass deep in McPherson territory and made a narrow escape up the sideline for a 95-yard touchdown return. He also recorded 15 tackles in the win.
McPherson advances to the round of eight and is one win away from making semifinals for the third time since Haines entered the program.
The teams, separated by less than 25 miles, also met last month with Haines having another big performance in that meeting. Buhler lined up for a late field goal with McPherson holding a 28-26 lead but Haines blocked the kick and sent the Bullpups home with a victory.
