The University of Southern California today granted an unconditional release to incoming freshman football star
Seantrel Henderson, who was the No. 1-ranked senior in the USA by MaxPreps recruiting expert Tom Lemming.
Trojan head coach Lane Kiffin said in a school release, “As of 1:30 p.m. (PT), we are releasing Seantrel Henderson out of his national letter of intent with zero penalties and no restrictions. Seantrel has been great through the whole process and we wish him the best of luck in his decision.”
The massive offensive tackle from Cretin-Derham Hall (St. Paul, Minn.) ended a pressure-filled recruiting period by signing with the Trojans just two weeks before they were hit with major NCAA sanctions.
"I’ve been doing this for 31 years and I never have seen anything like this happen with the No. 1 player," Lemming said. "It’s a bizarre thing because he could have waited a couple weeks for the (NCAA) verdict."
Lemming could recall only one other incident that was even close: Tim Brown was leaning toward Southern Methodist when NCAA sanctions caused him to switch to Notre Dame.
Now the University of Miami and Ohio State are back in the picture, with Miami, perhaps, in the lead, Lemming projected.
