NFL legend and multiple-time Texas state champion head coach Jason Witten is headed to Oklahoma to become the school's tight ends coach according to a
report by On3.
Witten has been the head coach at
Liberty Christian (Argyle, Texas) since 2021 and went 46-15 during his tenure with two state championships. He also got to coach his sons
C.J. Witten — now at Rice — and
Cooper Witten, a five-star prospect in the Class of 2027.
He takes over a tight ends room that was responsible for producing just one touchdown in 2025. Witten will get to work with
Trynae Washington, a four-star prospect from the Class of 2025 who didn't record any statistics as a true freshman this season. The Sooners have had several players at that position go on to prominent NFL careers including Keith Jackson, Jermaine Gresham, Mark Andrews and Stephen Alexander.
Over the past three seasons at Liberty Christian, the Warriors passed for over 9,000 yards with 139 touchdowns while winning 34 games.
Witten is one of the greatest tight ends in NFL history and a lock to become a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He is eligible to be inducted this year and the verdict will be announced in February.
He is second all-time among tight ends with 1,228 receptions and 13,046 receiving yards, only trailing Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez in both categories. His 74 career receiving touchdowns rank sixth all-time.
After a standout college career at Tennessee, he was selected by Dallas in the third round of the 2003 NFL Draft. He caught 35 passes as a rookie before hauling in at least 60 receptions every season with the Cowboys from 2004-19.
Witten also made history in Dallas by catching the final touchdown pass at famed Texas Stadium, the site of five NFC Championship games made famous by Tom Landry and his signature fedora. Nine months later, he christened AT&T Stadium by catching the first touchdown in the new football palace.
At
Elizabethton (Tenn.), Witten was coached by his grandfather Dave Rider, who won 246 games in Virginia and Tennessee. His brother Shawn is the current head coach at Elizabethton, located at 907 Jason Witten Way, and has won 178 games since taking over the reins of the brother's alma mater in 2007. Another brother Ryan, is an assistant coach with the program.
The move to Oklahoma reunites the 11-time Pro Bowler with former Dallas teammate DeMarco Murray, who played with the Cowboys from 2011-14.
