The 2,000 fans that crammed into the facility got their money's worth, as Bishop Montgomery once again proved its strength by scoring another impressive victory, this time 87-80.
David Singleton led the way for the Knights (29-2) with 25 points and was the difference in the second half with his shooting barrage. Oregon State-bound
Ethan Thompson added 23 and drove the lane at will. Teammates
Gianni Hunt and
Jordan Schakel combined for 25.
Chino Hills was led by
LiAngelo Ball with 25 points,
Elizjah Scott added 22. Bishop Montgomery's superior defense was the key, especially in the second half. It held LiAngelo Ball to just eight points after intermission, limited
LaMelo Ball to just 14 points and held Chino Hills 22 points below its season average.
Bishop Montgomery will now face sixth-ranked Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) in Saturday's regional final. The winner of that plays the Northern California region champion March 25 at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento for a state title.
Bishop Montgomery was coming off a 64-49 first-round win over Torrey Pines (San Diego) when
Fletcher Tynen led a balanced scoring attack with 14 points.
Chino Hills, the defending state and mythical national champion, was coming off a 130-110 first-round win over Birmingham (Lake Balboa) on Friday, when LiAngelo Ball erupted for 52 points.
Chino Hills defeated Bishop Montgomery twice last season and ended the Knights' season with an 84-62 victory in the Southern California regional final. The two squads had not met this season before Tuesday night.
