Video: Nation's top-rated dual-threat QB passes for 528 yards, 7 touchdowns. Bryce Young prepares for No. 1 vs. No. 2 showdown with record-breaking performance.
Maybe he was getting in a good warm-up before his team's showdown with national No. 2
St. Frances Academy (Baltimore, Md.). Or maybe he finally was able to play more than two quarters in a competitive game.
Whatever the case,
Bryce Young put on a remarkable show Friday night in Arizona.
The nation's top-rated dual threat quarterback, starring on the nation's top-ranked team,
Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.), set a school record with 528 passing yards in a 71-21 win at Centennial.
Young, a 6-foot, 190-pound senior, completed 31-of-37 and seven touchdowns, which tied the school record.
School records at Mater Dei are something to brag about, considering Heisman Trophy winners Matt Leinart (2004) and John Huarte (1964) attended, along with
Matt Barkley and
JT Daniel, the MaxPreps Player of the Year in 2017.
In fact, Young's 528 yards broke Daniels' school record of 429 yards and tied his TD mark of seven. The two will be competing for playing time next year at USC. Daniels has been the starting quarterback since he was a true freshman but tore his ACL in an opening week win over Fresno State.
Young is preparing for St. Franes Academy in Saturday's showdown of the top two teams in the nation at the
Trinity League vs. USA Showcase at St. John Bosco.
The clips above should give St. Frances something to focus on. Then again, considering the Panthers have won 26 straight since 2017 and outscored opponents 1,179-106 in that span, Young might need another record-setting performance.
