Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney made a decision Monday that is sure to be scrutinized and potentially second-guessed in the weeks and months to come.
Swinney named true freshman
Trevor Lawrence the team's starting quarterback, replacing Kelly Bryant – a senior who led the Tigers to the College Football Playoff a year ago.
Lawrence, a 6-foot-5, 205-pound product of
Cartersville (Ga.), has thrown for exactly 600 yards this season with nine touchdown passes against two interceptions.
Saturday in a 49-21 win over Georgia Tech, Lawrence completed 13 of 18 attempts for 176 yards and four touchdowns.
In four years as the starting quarterback at Cartersville, Lawrence threw for 13,902 yards and 161 touchdowns. The Hurricanes compiled a 53-4 record during that span.
247Sports tagged him as the No. 1 prospect in the high school football Class of 2018.
Lawrence's first start will be Saturday at home against Syracuse.
