See Paige Conklin of Indiana make an amazing save.
Once again Omaha Marian takes the top spot as Nebraska's most dominant volleyball program. The Crusaders, who have played in six state finals since 2007, winning four of them, outdistanced all of Class A and the rest of the field to take the same top prize it claimed a year ago.
Amy McLeay, who took over for Rochelle Rohlfs in 2015, won a state title on her first try. With Rohlfs in charge, the Crusaders battled to the top in 2009 and again in 2013 and 2014. Omaha Marian finished in the MaxPreps All-Class Top 25 Computer Rankings in each of the last 10 seasons, taking the top spot in 2009 and 2015.
Papillion-LaVista South was a distant second with 260 points, 69 points behind Omaha Marian. The Titans dominated Class A and Nebraska from 2008-2012 with Gwen Egbert at the helm. Not only did Egbert guide the Titans to state championships in 2010, 2011 and 2012 and state runner-up finishes in 2008 and 2009, she guided Papillion-LaVista South to a No. 10 finish in the MaxPreps 2010 National Computer Rankings.
Brad Reichmuth took over the program from Elena Pietro in 2015 and guided the Titans to Top 10 finishes in each of his two seasons. Papillion-LaVista South played its way into the Top 25 every year except 2013 and took top honors all three years in which it took the Big School titles.
Class C1 power Kearney Catholic was the first school below Class A to jump into this week's Top 10, grabbing the third spot with 256 out of a possible 450 points. The Stars, winners of four state championships in six state final appearances since 2007, also finished in the Top 25 all 10 seasons.
Grand Island Northwest and Papillion-LaVista round out the Top 5 this week in fourth and fifth respectively after winning three state titles between them. Northwest finished as Class B's runner-up six times, while the Monarchs took second once. Papillion-LaVista is the only other program in this week's Top 10 to finish in our Top 10 nationally after they took seventh in 2008.
Lincoln Southwest is the only member of the Top 10 that did not win or compete for a state title. But the Silver Hawks did make nine of the last 10 Cornhusker State Top 25s.
Classes C2, D1 and D2 did not land a program in the Top 10. But they were well represented. Hastings St. Cecilia was the highest ranked Class C2 club, earning a No. 17 ranking with 87 points. Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family was the Top Class D1 program, claiming the No. 30 spot with 53 points after winning state titles in 2011 and 2012.
Class D2 power Exeter-Milligan finished 10 points out of the Top 10 and in 12th place after winning four state titles in five tries and landing in the Top 25 three times since 2007.
MaxPreps has developed its own system in determining which volleyball programs compete at the highest level over an extended period of time. Here is how points are accumulated:
1. 20 points for a state title
2. 10 points for finishing as a state runner-up
3. Other points are based on a team's Top 25 standing in the final MaxPreps Nebraska Computer Rankings. For instance, if a school claimed the top spot, it received 25 points, while a No. 25 ranking is good for one point.
