From Scottsbluff to Omaha, Crofton to Beatrice, and all points in between, basketballs will be dropping through nets throughout the Cornhusker State in February. In all, there are 435 girls basketball contests left in February featuring at least one Nebraska school. This week, we present to you our Top 10 girls basketball battles for February.
In our top matchup of the month, MaxPreps' Class C1 favorite Lincoln Lutheran travels to Hastings St. Cecilia on Saturday to take on the Class C2 top-ranked Bluehawks. With both clubs sitting at the top of their respective classes, something has to give here. Reserve your seat now!
Our No. 2 pick has Class A top-ranked Millard South hitting the road to battle fellow Class A hard court power Omaha Central, Nebraska's third-ranked big school squad. Then, in our third best game, Class B No. 2 Omaha Skutt Catholic visits Class B ‘s third-ranked Norris Feb. 8. Each of our top three games features at least one unbeaten Cornhusker State squad.
Class D1 power Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family and Crofton, a dominant Class C2 squad, make up our No. 4 game while Glenwood (Iowa), the seventh-ranked Class 4A team in the Hawkeye State, travels to Fremont to battle the No. 2 Tigers to round out our Top 5 games.
If your game isn't mentioned in this week's Top 10, don't fret, there is still plenty of basketball action scattered throughout the state over the next few weeks heading into district play. So, buckle your seat belt and get ready for the basketball ride.
Nebraska's Top 10 girls basketball games for February
1. Class C1 No. 1 Lincoln Lutheran (Lincoln) (16-2) at Class C2 No. 1 St. Cecilia (Hastings) (19-0) — Feb. 5 Two top-ranked teams battling on the hard court. It doesn't get any better than that!
2. Class A No. 1 Millard South (Omaha) (18-0) at Class A No. 3 Omaha Central (Omaha) (17-2) — Feb. 5 Both schools figure to be in the mix for a state championship. The Patriots took Round One. Can the Eagles respond?
3. Class B No. 2 Skutt Catholic (Omaha) (16-0) at Class B No. 3 Norris (Firth) (14-2) — Feb. 8 Norris fell just short of capturing the Class B title a year ago. Skutt Catholic lost in the quarterfinals. Both teams are on a mission.
4. Class D1 No. 2 Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family (Humphrey) (15-3) at Class C2 No. 3 Crofton (16-2) — Feb. 8 Addison Schneider and the Bulldogs take their game on the road to battle the Warriors. The winner carries plenty of mojo into the postseason.
5. Class 4A No. 7 Glenwood (Iowa) (13-2) at Class A No. 2 Fremont (15-1) — Feb. 5 We love those border state showdowns. Especially, when they feature two ranked teams.
6. Class C2 No. 2 Guardian Angels Central Catholic (West Point) (17-1) at Class C2 No. 7 Pender (16-4) — Feb. 8 Two of northeast Nebraska's finest girls basketball programs battle for Class C2 supremacy.
7. Class B No. 4 Scottsbluff (15-3) vs. Class B No. 7 Sidney (15-4) — Feb. 15 These two clubs will see plenty of each other in February. Sidney travels to Scottsbluff on Feb. 5. The Bearcats return the favor Feb. 15.
8. Class C2 No. 9 Elkhorn Valley (Tilden) (16-2) at Class D2 No. 2 St. Francis (Humphrey) (17-3) — Feb. 11 One of the hot teams in Class C2, Elkhorn Valley is on a mission to make the Class C2 state tournament for the first time since 2019. St. Francis, meanwhile, is on pace to defend its Class D2 state title.
9. Class C1 No. 5 Wahoo (14-4) at Class B No. 8 Beatrice (9-2) — Feb. 5 Beatrice took Round One 51-44 in late January. This time, however, they play in Beatrice.
10. Class 1A Division 1 No. 16 Rawlins County (Atwood, Kan.) (13-2) at Class D2 No. 10 Wauneta-Palisade (Wauneta) (13-5) — Feb. 8 Have we made the point yet that we appreciate border state showdowns?
