Video: Trevor Brown - San Francisco Giatnts
See the home run-hitting backup catcher in his prep days.Is
Trevor Brown the next Trevor Story, or is Buster Posey the next Wally Pipp?
Brown, the backup catcher behind Buster Posey, hit two home runs Tuesday while playing in place of the injured all-star in the San Francisco Giants' 7-2 win over the Rockies.
That makes three for the season in just eight at-bats. The strong start is somewhat reminiscent of the rise of Story, the Colorado shortstop, who has come from out of nowhere to set Major League records with seven home runs in the first week of the season.
See photos of Trevor Story and quotes from his high school coachBrown's ascendance to power-hitting catcher may be even more unique than Story's. In high school at
Hart (Newhall, Calif.), Brown had just one home run in three seasons on the varsity team (2007-09). In 1,114 minor league at-bats, Brown had just seven home runs in three seasons. In three seasons at UCLA, Brown hit just four career home runs, three in his final season with the Bruins. The Giants drafted Brown in the 10th round of the 2012 draft.
So does Brown's power display make Posey the next Wally Pipp? Pipp famously was held out of a New York Yankees baseball game in 1925 due to injury (a headache) and replaced by Lou Gehrig, the first game of Gehrig's 2,130 consecutive starts.
Apparently not, because Posey is listed as the Giants' starting catcher today against the Rockies.
