The high school football season in New York came to a close over the weekend.
St. Anthony's (Melville) was among the victors, defeating No. 11
St. Francis (Hamburg) in the New York State Catholic High School Athletic Association football championship game. That victory helped propel the Friars to the No. 1 ranking in the final state MaxPreps Top 25.
St. Anthony’s (11-1) trailed St. Francis 20-0 at halftime but roared back to score 27 unanswered points to win 27-20. Seniors
Frank Ruta and New York MaxPreps Player of the Year
Dante Torres each scored two rushing touchdowns to bring the Friars their first state crown since 2013.
Coming in at No. 3 is undefeated
Somers (Lincolndale). The Tuskers won their first state championship since 2016 with a 58-21 win over No. 18
Union-Endicott (Endicott) in Class A.
Finishing No. 5 is
Lewis J. Bennett/Olmsted/Middle Early College/East (Buffalo), which won the Class AA title with a 42-8 victory over
Newburgh Free Academy (Newburgh).
