If the opening week of the Texas high school football season is a sign of things to come, 2019 will be a fan's dream.
There were upsets, basketball-type final scores and record-setting individual performances in Week 1.
Three teams in the upper third of the MaxPreps Top 25 Texas ranking, No. 1 North Shore (Houston), No. 4 Lake Travis (Austin) and No. 6 Aledo all lost on their home field.

A look at the movement as football hits September.
Amidst the carnage, Duncanville moves into the No. 1 spot. Close behind in second is Katy, the team that took down defending state champion North Shore, 24-21.
If high-scoring games are your thing, consider this. No. 9 Aledo scored 57 points and still came up three shy of the 60 put up by No. 5 Guyer (Denton).
In a similar scenario, No. 15 Rockwall at home totaled 59 points. But the problem was
No. 8 Highland Park put up 66 in a game that produced almost 1,500 yards of total offense.
For individual heroics, Weatherford running back Dez Forrest put his name in the record book by scoring 58 points (nine touchdowns and a 2-point conversion) in his team's 81-40 shellacking of Granbury. The 58 points is the most in an 11-man UIL game since 1940 and the fourth most all-time.
The junior carried 18 times for 289 yards and seven touchdowns. He had five catches for 187 yards and two scores.

What a wild way to begin the season. Three Top 10 casualties in Week 1 of Class 6A action with North Shore (Houston), Lake Travis (Austin) and Rockwall falling. The shocker of the three was Lake Travis' 35-14 loss to Martin (Arlington). Lake Travis defeated Martin by the identical score in Arlington a year ago.

Highland Park (Dallas) had its hands full in stretching its winning streak to 32, outscoring Class 6A Rockwall on the road 66-59. The other Top 5 teams prevailed by big margins. Note No. 5 Foster (Richmond) thrashed College Station 52-14.

Despite the rare home loss, 60-57 to Class 6A Guyer (Denton), Aledo showed enough fight against a very talented foe to maintain the top spot in the division. Manvel entered the Top 5 following a 34-6 triumph over Clear Lake (Houston).

No change in this division after one week, but a clash between No. 1 La Vega and No. 3 Argyle this week will be closely watched. No. 2 Carthage was its old dominating self in a 48-0 thumping of Jacksonville.

The top two teams had their hands full in the opening week. Pleasant Grove (Texarkana) eased past Paris 22-16 and West Orange-Stark clipped Class 5A Nederland 21-20. Silsbee is replaced in the Top 5 by Gilmer.

No. 1 Newton showed no weakness in a 76-0 opening victory over Kirbyville. No. 3 Gunter held on for a 22-21 victory over preseason No. 5 Daingerfield. Cisco moves into the five spot this week coming off a 44-27 triumph over Sweetwater.

Former No. 1 Mason's 47-7 loss to Wall opened the door for Refugio which moved up from No. 2 after an impressive 43-7 victory over Tidehaven (El Maton). New Deal moves into the top five after a 35-6 victory over Roosevelt (Lubbock)

Even with only three returning starters on either side of the ball, Mart had no problem taming Bosqueville (Waco) 52-14. The top five from preseason remain intact.

After a tight 20-14 victory over Legacy School of Sports Sciences (Spring), Bishop Dunne will be tested by UIL Class 6A opponents the next two weeks vs. Skyline (Dallas) and DeSoto. Trinity Christian Cedar Hill last week kept its winning streak alive on the road at Bishop Lynch (Dallas) 16-13.
