As
LaMelo Ball gets set for his NBA Draft moment Wednesday night, we look back at one of the more memorable performances in recent high school basketball history. Back on Feb. 7, 2017, the then-sophomore at
Chino Hills (Calif.) piled up 92 points in a 146-123 win against Los Osos (Rancho Cucamonga).
Chino Hills was coming off its first loss in 60 games the previous weekend to Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.) and was without older brother LiAngelo Ball (ankle injury) against Los Osos. That gave LaMelo the green light.
He responded by going 37 of 61 from the field and had 41 points in the fourth quarter alone. He also dished out seven assists and grabbed five rebounds.
Teammate Eli Scott – now a conference player of the year candidate at Loyola Marymount – also produced a big stat line in the game with 29 points, 17 rebounds and 14 assists.
Ball's effort was good for No. 2 all-time in California according to Cal-Hi Sports. The national record belongs to Danny Heater of Burnsville (W.Va.), who went for 135 points in January of 1960. At least 14 other players have scored 100 points or more in a game according to the National Federation of High Schools Record Book.
Ball went on to average 26.7 points and nearly 10 assists per game as a sophomore at Chino Hills. He would leave the school prior to his junior year for stops with the Baller Brand-sponsored Junior Basketball Association, SPIRE Institute (Geneva, Ohio) and the Hawks of Australia's National Basketball League.
