St. Benedict's Prep (Newark, N.J.) junior Edward Cheserek won the Passaic Coaches Invitational in a Garret Mountain course-record time of 14:53. The previous record of 15:16 had stood since 2003.
* Three-time Class A state champion Maddie Meyers of
Northwest (Seattle) won the Jim Danner Championship Varsity race in 17:38 during the Nike Pre-National meet at Portland Meadows. She won the 5,000-meter race by just three seconds over freshman Jordyn Colter from
Cherry Creek (Greenwood Village, Colo.).
POTPOURRI* Not even three concussions can keep Kristi Denny down for long. The
El Toro (Lake Forest, Calif.) athlete had to give up softball pitching, but is making a great transition to tennis. Her father, John Denny, reports she has compiled a 15-5 record at No. 3 singles after taking up the sport in June of 2010.

* Volleyball coaching milestone victories achieved last week included No. 1,100 for Ann Schilling, who has won nine state titles at
Bayside Academy (Daphne, Ala.); and No. 800 for Steve Haaser, who has won seven state titles at
Southside (Fort Smith, Ark.).
