There's a new No. 1 this week in the MaxPreps California Top 25 girls basketball rankings, but it's no one new.
La Jolla Country Day, which has been the No. 1 team all season — The Torreys are No. 1 in the national rankings as well — curiously fell to No. 2 last week in the state behind Mater Dei without losing a game.
This week, turn about is fair play as LJCD as back at No. 1 after winning two games and a San Diego Section Open Diving title.
For the first time in weeks, the Torreys were seriously challenged, before beating Bonita Vista 48-46. They then took care of business with a 54-37 win over Cathedral Catholic.
Mater Dei did nothing to diminish its top ranking with a hard-fought 77-65 win over No. 5 Windward in the Southern Section Open Division finals.
The 40th CIF State Basketball Championships begin Tuesday with the Open Division that includes most of the elite teams opening on Wednesday.
In the Southern Region, La Jolla Country got the nod over Mater Dei for the top spot. In the North, third ranked Mitty (23-4) was the obviously choice. All three teams have a first-round byes.
Mitty has barely been challenged in longer than a month, including a surprisingly lopsided 76-44 win over Pinewood in the Central Coast Section Open Division finals at Stanford.
The state finals are March 13-14 at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento.
Below is a full look at the Top 25. The rankings are updated every Tuesday and Friday.
