Ohio was one of 10 states kicking off the 2020 high school football season this weekend. Of the state's Top 25, 22 were in action Friday with key games including No. 1 LaSalle hosting No. 6 Elder, No. 5 Washington (Massillon) hosting St. Edward (Lakewood) and No. 7 Dublin Coffman traveling to No. 22 Dublin Jerome.
Defending Division II state champs La Salle (Cincinnati) outlasted Elder (Cincinnati) in an epic season opener at The Pit. The Division I runner-up kicked a field goal with no time left on the clock to send the game to overtime.
After both scored touchdowns in the first overtime, Elder scored on its opening possession in the second OT.
Gi'Bran Payne scored a 19-yard touchdown to make it 52-51 and Zach Branam added the game-winning two point conversion to pull out a 53-52 victory.
The national Game of the Week lived up to the hype as No. 30 St. Edward (Lakewood, Ohio) overcame a 20-10 halftime deficit and beat No. 50 Washington (Massillon, Ohio) 24-23.
On Sunday, No. 3 Pickerington Central hosts rival Pickerington North.
No. 11 St. Ignatius (Cleveland) is the only Top 25 team idle this week.
