Colton Sampson of
Lakeside School (Eufaula, Ala.) is high school baseball's national leader in strikeouts.
The senior southpaw has 158 strikeouts for the Chiefs over 76.2 innings. He hit double-digit strikeouts in 10 of his 13 starts when he threw at least four innings. In a 4-0 complete game win March 19, Sampson struck out 15 batters while registering two hits at the plate, including a double.
Jackson Peavy of
Peach County (Fort Valley, Ga.) comes in at No. 2 with 141 strikeouts over 59 innings. The junior lefty is committed to Georgia and has a 0.83 earned run average this season. On April 4 he had a season-high 19 strikeouts in a complete game 9-1 victory. Twice this season Peavy went six innings without allowing a hit including on Feb. 17 when he struck out 15 batters.
At No. 3 is
Eli Heyen of
Hondo (Texas) with 136 strikeouts. Headed to Ranger College, the senior has a 0.96 ERA over 65.2 innings. The 6-foot-1, 200-pounder showed his power with both the ball and the bat in his hands. In a 7-1 win on April 23, Heyen struck out 16 batters over six innings and hit a home run.
