The start of high school athletics in Texas' two largest classifications was pushed back five weeks in a Tuesday announcement by the University Interscholastic League. Practice for Class 6A and Class 5A moves from Aug. 3 to Sept. 7 with the announcement while the first week of games now will begin Sept. 24-26.
The UIL announcement does not impact smaller classifications in the state. Class 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A will continue as scheduled with practices
beginning on Aug. 3 and games kicking off Aug. 27-29.
The playoffs for Class 6A and Class 5A, which were slated to begin Nov. 12 now will commence Dec. 3. The state championship games, originally scheduled for Dec. 16-19 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington will be pushed back to an undetermined January date.
Tuesday's decision to postpone the season came one day after
California announced its plan
to move back its football season to January. The California
Interscholastic Federation moved back both its fall and winter seasons
and split all its sports between January and July.
