Scouting report: The Hornets return eight of their top 10 scorers from last season's state championship team, including UCLA commitment Powell (19.7 points per game) and promising sophomore twins Tyree and Tyrell Robinson.
Simpson, Byrd, Josh Smith, Kevin Smith and Kirkland all served as valuable role players for a team that won 24 games in a row to close out 2009-10, including a 15-point win over St. Francis (Mountain View, Calif.) in the title game.
Powell is ranked No. 48 overall in the 2011 class by MaxPreps, while the Robinson twins – also promising football prospects – are already attracting major-conference college attention. Tyree played the more significant role as a freshman, averaging 9.7 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game.
The Hornets will be tournament tested in December. Lincoln hosts the Hosea Hall Christmas Invitational and also heads to events in Santa Monica and Torrey Pines. Showdowns with Gardena Serra and Sacramento come in January.
