The Ohio high school football playoffs entered the regional semifinal round Friday with several compelling matchups. They didn’t disappoint.
In Division I, No. 1 ranked Mentor failed to reach 40 points for the ninth straight game, but the Cardinals did handle No. 22 Canton McKinley 34-13. That, coupled with No. 2 St. Edward’s 47-9 win over No. 15 Euclid, sets up a Mentor-St. Edward rematch in next week’s regional final. The Cardinals beat the Eagles 29-28 in Week 1.
That’s not the only titanic matchup in Week 13.
In Division II, No. 4 Massillon Washington beat rival Massillon Perry 35-7, while No. 7 Archbishop Hoban survived No. 21 Mayfield 21-17. That sets up a rematch of last year’s state final - won 42-28 by Hoban - in next week’s regional final.
Other big winners were No. 3 Elder (beat No. 5 St. Xavier 28-24), No. 11 Colerain (beat No. 8 Fairfield 28-7), No. 12 Springfield (beat No. 16 Dublin Jerome 37-14), No 18 Dublin Coffman (beat No. 23 Whitmer 42-17) and No. 20 Pickerington Central (beat No. 19 Olentangy Orange 44-0).
Upsets? Unranked Groveport-Madison upended No. 14 Olentangy Liberty 13-7, Olentangy beat No. 17 Anthony Wayne 31-21 and Avon beat No. 25 Benedictine 49-28.
