As the Nebraska high school baseball season ended for most schools and headed into the state tournament weekend for 16 others, we started crunching the numbers and selecting our Top 10 hitters and pitchers that will step foot onto Werner Park, Tal Anderson Field, Fricke Field and Millard North in Omaha to compete for state baseball titles beginning this Saturday and running through Friday.
Of the 16 baseball programs that punched their tickets to the state tournament, eleven of them are represented in this week's Top 10s with Class B's Elkhorn North and Omaha Gross Catholic landing three representatives each in our dual Top 10s.
But – first things first. Let's look at Nebraska's state tournament big swatters. Beatrice's Tucker Timmerman – the No. 1 hitter and pitcher at the state tournament - tops the list after he obliterated opposing pitching for a .554 batting average and scored 21 runs while knocking in 25 more this spring. Connor Capece of Omaha Gross Catholic – the state tournaments No. 2 hitter and pitcher - produced a .513 batting average while scoring 15 Cougar runs and knocking in another 33.
Kearney's Korben Rich and Dalton Bargo of Omaha Westside hit .500 and .485, respectively, and scored 42 runs between them to finish in the No. 3 and 4 spots respectively, while Elliott Peterson of Omaha Creighton Prep rounded out the Top 5 after hitting .467 and scoring 22 runs. Timmerman hit for the highest average and produced the Top 10's top on-base percentage and slugging percentage.
As we mentioned earlier, Timmerman and Capece were dominant on the mound as well, producing the Top 10's top two earned run averages of .024 and 0.34 respectively. A junior, Timmerman gave up just seven hits and one earned run during the regular season. He also issued six walks to 53 strikeouts in just over 29 innings of work. Capece allowed five hits and just one earned run in 20.2 innings while walking seven batters and striking out 37.
Devin Fritzsch of Elkhorn South produced the Top 10's third-best earned run average of 1.00 after allowing 13 hits and just three earned runs, while Elkhorn North's Ryan Harrahill and Gavin Brummund of Omaha Skutt Catholic round out the Top 5 flame throwers in the No. 4 and 5 spots respectively.
Harrahill is the Top 10's strikeout king with 76 Ks on the season, while Timmerman posted the stingiest opponent on base average of .070. Timmerman and Capece were the only athletes named to both lists.
In order to be eligible for this week's Top 10s, batters had to hit .400 or better and have at least 50 at bats, while pitchers were required to maintain an earned run average below 2.00 and throw at least 20 innings. The statistics used for this week's Top 10 were drawn from MaxPreps' database Thursday.
